Beyond the thousands of surgeries he had in tow, what most shocked the world the King of Pop was that his skin changed from black to white. This amazing and controversial change was because – supposedly – the singer was suffering from vitiligo.

The vitiligo is a disease that involves the loss of pigmentation of the skin, which causes white spots on it. How it affects the person’s appearance can be traumatic and disruptive, but the fact is that vitiligo does not cause any harm to health. People with this problem may be as or healthier than those who do not.

What are the causes of vitiligo?

Not yet known exactly. Is believed to be an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the melanocytes, which are the cells that give natural color to the skin through the production of melanin.

Vitiligo is also considered as a genetic disease, inherited disease, whose risk increases in people with a family history of thyroid problems, diabetes and alopecia or hair loss. Another thing to note about this skin disorder is not contagious.

There are several types of vitiligo. The focus, when isolate spots appear, the general, when the skin is spotted almost the entire body and the segment when the skin is stain in a specific body part. Generalized vitiligo is the most common.

While there is no cure for vitiligo, there are various treatments to restore skin color. Many of them are given by doctors.

Visible damage
Invisible Damage
Healthy tan
Alternative harmful

Among the most coveted accessories of the summer is the golden glow that remains after a day at the beach. But the damage to the skin that causes the sun can last the life whole. Choose the healthy alternative. There are a variety of products for those who want a tan look without risking your health.

“A tan is not beauty, is how our body which protects against sun damage,” said Dr. Flor Mayoral, a dermatologist and professor at the University of Miami.

The sunlight reaching the earth has ultraviolet A and B (UVA and UVB). These ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes skin damage generally associated with the sun. The skin produces dark pigments to prevent UV rays penetrate the skin, said Dr. Mayoral.

Visible damage

In addition to causing irritation and burning, sunburn cause irreversible damage to the skin.

Stains

Also known as age spots occur in areas of the body that have had more contact with the sunrays. These spots may darken over time and are aesthetically undesirable especially in the face.

Wrinkles

The sun weakens the skin and makes it lose its elasticity. As you lose the elasticity, wrinkles begin to form causing premature skin aging according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

Invisible Damage

One of the most serious consequences of sun damage is skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There are several types of skin cancer, but the most damaging is the type melanoma can spread to organs and bones. If detected early is beatable, but melanoma can be fatal. According to CDC figures, between 65 and 90 percent of melanomas are caused by UV rays.

Symptoms of melanoma and how to treat it.

Healthy tan

In recent years there have been several products that mimic the color of a tan without exposing skin to ultraviolet rays.

“Most of these products cause a chemical reaction that discolors the surface cells,” says Mayoral.

Products:

Makeup: Bronzing powder or cream that is applied as a base or in place of blush.

Lotions that gradually darken the skin.

Sprays and foams snapshots apply for a few hours and leave the skin tanned to rinse.

Professional spray tanning premises specified. This is less economical than the above, but promises more evenly colored.

Dr. Mayoral recommends that you not apply the product in parts of the skin with many folds (elbows and knees) and suggests washing your hands afterwards to avoid yellow hands.

Alternative harmful

Tanning beds can be more harmful than sun exposure.

They emit only UVA rays that penetrate the skin more deeply without causing the initial irritation of a natural tan.

It is more likely that someone will receive an overdose of ultraviolet rays without realizing it, proving to be even more harmful, Mayoral said.

The sun produces vitamin D which is essential for the body. In moderation and with proper protection a little sun is good. In addition to wearing tan products recommended, follow our tips to protect yourself this summer.
