The points of the face are sometimes erroneously called “age spots” or “liver spots”. The truth is that the spots on the face appear as a result of prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Melanin, a pigment that gives skin its distinctive color, is produced by melanocytes. When exposed to the sun, melanocytes produce a dark pigment, but, when exposed to sunlight for long periods of time, melanocytes into overproduction mode spots on that stretch with an appearance of dark, almost black.
